Killer first sentences

I'm a sucker for a cracker opening sentence.

Here are some of my favourites.
Enjoy!

"We came on the wind of the carnival." Chocolat, Joanne Harris

"Joseph fixed his eyes on the coffin and thought of silkworms." The Running Man, Michael Gerard Bauer

"Change tiptoed into our lives with her eyes down, like a shy chick coming late to class." Boofheads, Mo Johnson

"HERE IS A SMALL FACT
You are going to die."
The Book Thief, Markus Zusak

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973." The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold

"The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do." A Monster Calls, Patrick Ness

  5. "She used to sell her kisses for caramels; her lips went for long licks of licorice and her touch for tangerines and tutti frutti."
    Firehead by Venero Armanno

I read this story ages ago and couldn't think of the title until I tried to remember the opening line. It is a brilliant and poetic book.

I also loved the opening of "Boofheads"

  6. That is indeed poetic and intriguing, Jeff. Makes you want to know more about the character, don't you think?

  7. That was the blurb on the back of the book too. It made me read it. It's about a new migrant family moving to Queensland in the early 1970's It's like a darker version of "Looking for Alabrandi"
